Customer’s needs
The Marina di San Nicola Consortium, which manages the Ladispoli (Rome) aqueduct, requested intervention to repair significant damage caused by lightning, which had compromised the pump room of the piezometric tower. Our inspection highlighted the following critical issues, caused by the inadequacy of the existing protection system:
- Lack of a sensor at the top of the tower.
- Damage to the equipotential conductor.
- Ineffective surge arresters in the electrical system.
- Inefficient verification of the grounding system.
In addition, the reinforced concrete structure with metal elements was not self-protected and did not comply with the tolerable risk parameters according to CEI EN 62305-1 and CEI EN 62305-2 standards.
Solution supplied
Euthalia designed a new Level IV protection system in compliance with current regulations, ensuring complete protection against direct and indirect lightning strikes and power surges. The project included:
- Design and installation of the Antimpatto® Technology system, taking into account urban and orographic characteristics to optimize antenna positioning, replacing the previous sensors.
- Revamping of existing drops, using them where possible to reduce the impact of the installation and improve efficiency.
- Installation of type 1, type 2, and type 3 SPD devices to protect electrical panels and sub-panels, as well as Smooty Ethernet devices for data lines.
- Installation of a high-impedance ground filter (model SCt 500) to eliminate the risks arising from indirect lightning strikes.
Thanks to these interventions, the protection of the structure and internal equipment has been significantly improved, ensuring operational continuity and eliminating the risk of future damage.
